THIS JAZZY WEEK!

Tuesday, July 1, SINGERS’ OPEN MIC w/ ELLEN HOFFMAN Isn’t it time for YOU to sing?

Wednesday, July 2, VIVE LE JAZZ! This group is devoted to presenting both original material written by George Cole and classic American Jazz. It was formed to celebrate the excitement, drama, and virtuosity of Gypsy Jazz as pioneered by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Melodic content and dazzling improvisation is emphasized to create the full, lush sound that is their hallmark. George Cole, vocals & guitar; Julian Smedley, violin; Kathy Sierra, violin & vocals; Vic Wong, guitar; & Sam Bevan, bass

Thursday, July 3, FIVEPLAY FivePlay is a San Francisco Bay Area jazz quintet that plays original, ear-pleasing melodic jazz. The music is fresh, rooted in the best jazz traditions while drawing on modern harmonies and a rich palette of tone colors. Like its predecessor, the group Triceratops, the repertoire is created by the composing team of Tony Corman on guitar, Laura Klein on piano and Dave Tidball on saxes. The group is rounded out by the stellar rhythm section of Alan Hall on drums and Paul Smith on bass. “This modern-sounding, West Coast crew…[write] better-than-Messenger-like originals, providing captivating moments for listeners." Jazztimes

Friday, July 4, THE TERRY DISLEY EXPERIENCE! World-renowned jazz keyboardist and composer (2 Grammy nominated CD’s w/ Acoustic Alchemy), Terry has worked with Van Morrison, Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Jon Bon Jovi, Sir Mick Jagger & Tom Jones. He was musical director for Dave Stewart (The Eurythmics) for 5 years and worked on 5 major motion picture scores. He received Young Jazz Musician of the Year award and has played with many jazz legends including Eddie Henderson, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Urbie Green, and has opened shows for jazz giants McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, Jimmy Heath, Monty Alexander and Miles Davis. “A decade ago, he had recorded with Dave Stewart, George Harrison, Bryan Ferry, Mick Jagger and other British stars, and moved to San Francisco and make his own music...” from the May 17, 2008 Chron Datebook article The San Francisco based Terry Disley Experience is a brilliant fun and dynamic 5 piece All-Star Jazz group, including Erik Jekabson on trumpet, Lorn Leber on guitar & Joel Smith on bass, with a contemporary approach, playing original Terry Disley compositions embracing swing, cool jazz, funk, salsa & reggae. This is a show not to be missed!

Saturday, July 5, YANCIE TAYLOR JAZZTET & THE 2ND ANNUAL VIBRAPHONE SUMMIT with A LATIN JAZZ THEME! Yancie Taylor , a genuine local treasure and acclaimed vibes player, has earned critical acclaim by bringing his special panache to the international jazz scene. Bold, subtle, and versatile, he has earned his loyal following, people who greatly appreciate his ever changing performances. A musical event with Yancie is always an opportunity not to be missed. Influenced at an early age by the "straight" jazz piano style of Les McCann and Ramsey Lewis, Yancie was caught by the sweet tones of the vibraphone during the Latin "craze" of the 1960s. He attributes his deepest influence to the masters: Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, and Cal Tjader "He truly is a hard swinger from the Hutcherson school who approaches the instrument with the same level of energy and intensity but without all the fanfare and face-making that Hutcherson is famous for." - Mal Sands, L.A. Jazz Scene "Yancie Taylor is an impressive and gifted vibraphonist. He is fast rising and certainly here to stay." - Jazz Now Tonight: Yancie Taylor & Kyle Athayde, vibes; Roy Brown, piano; James Bailey, saxes; Aaron Germain, bass; Ted Strong, congas; Carlitos Medrano, percussion & Julian Carroll, MC & Jazz poet.

Sunday, July 6, HARVEY WAINAPEL TRIO Saxophonist Harvey Wainapel makes a rare bay area appearance as a bandleader; Harvey has performed with McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, Dave Brubeck, Ray Charles, Airto Moreira/Flora Purim, and Jovino Santos Neto, among many others. Don't miss this intimate trio setting with two of Harvey's favorite musicians: the great Peter Barshay on bass, and Smith Dobson Jr. on drums. Called "One of the most promising and versatile players of his generation." - All Music Guide to Jazz. Harvey has performed with McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, Joe Henderson, Ray Charles, Johnny Coles and Billy Hart to name a few. "At home or on the road, Wainapel plays with the same performance attitude which for me is what jazz improvisation is all about. In the studio or in concert, Wainapel expresses his beautiful relaxed sound throughout. It's a pleasure to listen to Harvey's soulful interpretations" -- Joe Lovano

& Saturday, July 12, BAYSIDE JAZZ with DAN HICKS!
