Intersection for the Arts' Weekly Update

Making and appreciating art is an evolving process of refinement. With practice and experience, we
can learn to see more, catch more subtleties, or create and perform in exciting new ways. So it
comes as no surprise that tonight's
Terrence Brewer Quintet show at Intersection for the Arts is
a thrilling treat for anyone who loves to see artists at the top of their form
. Brewer has been hailed by jazz aficionados everywhere and The San Francisco Chronicle's David Rubien writes that Brewer's "melodies inhabit your head" with "a natural, inviting sound that instantly transports you back to the heyday of classic jazz guitar." Combine this with Intersection's intimate setting
and you have the recipe for an extraordinary evening. And if you are inspired to refine your own craft, take a look at the
Intersection Institute's series of summer workshops designed to help
you hone your skills alongside other artists. If you are inspired to perform, to create works of art,
or to write, we have just the opportunity for you!

To mark Intersection's 43rd Anniversary, Bay Area artist Ala Ebtekar designed a limited edition T-shirt just for us! He combines images from photographer Jamel Shabazz's book "A Time Before Crack" and archival photographs of participants in the Persian tradition of Varzesh-e Pahlavani to create a hybridized heroic pose of celebration and style, traversing cultural traditions and geographic boundaries.

Ala Ebtekar (Berkeley, CA) received his B.F.A. from San Francisco Art Institute and M.F.A. from Stanford. He has exhibited locally at Gallery Paule Anglim, Gallery 16, The Luggage Store, Asian Art Museum, Richmond Art Center; nationally at Haven Arts, Asia Society Museum, The Annex, and internationally in France. His solo exhibition "Elemental" was presented at Intersection for the Arts in summer 2004. He was included in the 2006 California Biennial and received the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery Print Award in 2006 as well as San Francisco Art Insititute's Presidential Merit Scholarship. He was recently selected for Yerba Buena Center for the Arts upcoming Bay Area Now 5 exhibition.
