The fences are up, but the fun doesn't stop!

It's official - the transformation has hit the street at the Oakland
Museum of California. Green fences have closed off the Oak Street
museum entrance, and the 12th Street garage entrance-but the museum
(and garage) are still open, and there's plenty to see and do. Just
for you, contractors have scheduled the most noisy, dusty activities
for Mondays and Tuesdays when the museum is closed. So come on by!
Keep scrolling to read about upcoming exhibitions and programs.

Behind the green fence, changes are taking place everywhere. On the
Oak Street terrace, plantings have been taken away to make way for a
new canopy.
Meanwhile, in the Art and History Galleries, crews have stripped the
galleries bare.

The Natural Sciences department has also been hard at work, gathering
the best and brightest in the California science community for a
colloquium to discuss current issues in the Golden State's wildlife
and wild lands. When the Natural Sciences Gallery is transformed, the
new exhibits will inspire visitors to embrace and protect California's
wildlife.

Exhibitions: Birth of the Cool, Cool Remixed, In Our Own Backyard, and
the Art and History of Early California Birth of the Cool Through
August 17, 2008

Experience "cool," the hip new attitude and urbane sophistication that
infused the visual, graphic, and decorative arts; furniture;
architecture; music; and films produced in Southern California in the
1950s and early 1960s. Organized by the Orange County Museum of Art,
the exhibition includes a jazz lounge; clips of film, animation, and
TV shows; hard-edge abstract paintings; art, architectural, and
documentary photography; and an interactive timeline that highlights
examples of California, national and international culture and history
in the 1950s. Birth of the Cool examines the dynamic community of
artists who overlapped and interacted in Southern California at
mid-century-Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Charles and Ray Eames, John
Lautner, Richard Neutra, Helen Lundeberg, and others who played a
germinal role in the development of this iconic style of high
modernism.

Cool Remixed
Through August 17, 2008

This exhibition continues the conversation about what's "cool,"
putting a contemporary spin to the Birth of the Cool exhibition with
graffiti, DJs, lounges, street fashion, scraper bikes, video, skate
culture, and artwork created on a range of media -from car hoods to
sneakers. Curators Evelyn Orantes and Christine Lashaw from the
museum's Education Department worked with Oakland High School's Visual
Arts Academy (VAAMP), East Bay Asian Youth Center (EBAYC), Visual
Element of East Arts Alliance, Town Park, Youth Radio, Youth UpRising,
and local artist
Estria- to sample and mix today's art, music, design, fashion, and
culture.
In Our Own Backyard: A Celebration of the East Bay Regional Parks
Through October 12, 2008

Take a virtual tour of the East Bay Regional Parks, following the flow
of creeks from snow-capped Mount Diablo through protected park land to
the many parks along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay. A selection
of photographs from the museum's Bob Walker Archive celebrate the
diversity and habitats of the largest urban park district in the
county.
Populist interest in the Park District continues today as dedicated
citizens work to preserve open space so we all can enjoy "our
backyard." Guest curated by Christopher Beaver, author of After the
Storm: Bob Walker and the East Bay Regional Park District. (Wilderness
Press, Berkeley. 2007).
The Art and History of Early California Ongoing
