Art & Soul returns to downtown Oakland over Labor Day Weekend, August 30 & 31 and September 1, 2008.  Last year, more than 60,000 guests strolled through the streets to enjoy the art, the music, the food and the fun of Art & Soul.  The festival features six stages, 60 bands, over 175 artisans, a festive Family Fun Zone and community displays.    Art & Soul is a non-juried street festival that features both handcrafted wares and commercial, imported goods.  The Cultural Arts and Marketing Department, producers of the festival, seeks artisans to vend their handcrafted wares to the diverse and sophisticated Bay Area festival audience. (An Artisan is defined as one who handcrafts his/her work and vends in person.) Community in Focus:   Center for Cultural Innovation  Since 2001, the Center for Cultural Innovation (CCI) has been serving its mission to “promote knowledge sharing, networking and financial independence for individual artists and creative entrepreneurs by providing business training, grants and loans, and incubating innovative projects that create new program knowledge, tools and practices for artists in the field.”    With offices in Los Angeles and locally in the Bay Area, CCI is a strong supporting partner helping artists and arts organizations pursue and succeed in their endeavors. Following are several key CCI events and deadlines:    Save the Date! San Francisco Bay Area Arts Town hall comes to Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on Monday, June 9, 2008.  This FREE gathering of local and national leaders in the arts has been developed by CCI with a host of regional partners. This funding program is designed to enhance the working lives and creative environment for individual artists in California by funding tools and market strategies that will allow artists to create their best work more consistently, and distribute that work more broadly to new audiences. Artwork Purchase Program 2008—Deadline May 30, 2008   Up to $ 75,000 is available to purchase existing two-dimensional, low-relief or wall sculptural artwork.  Artists at all levels of professional development are invited to apply.     Small Scale Artwork Commission Program—Deadline June 30, 2008   Juvenile Justice Center  Sobering and Detoxification Centers  Up to $144,000 is available for these two programs. Artists who make two-dimensional, low-relief or wall sculptural artwork are invited to apply.  Artists will be commissioned to produce a new series of work in the studio over a six-month period. The artist's output will be acquired by the County and will be installed at the Juvenile Justice Center and the Sobering and Detoxification Centers. Artists interested in creating artwork for the communities served at these unique facilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Artists will be asked to create works with positive themes that contribute to a safe and supportive environment.     Applications for these opportunities must be submitted online through the CaFÉ™ website, www.callforentry.org (search for 'Alameda County'). These opportunities are open to practicing, professional visual artists who live, are permanently employed, or rent/own an artist's studio in Alameda County. Qualified professional artists, including women and African American, Latino/Chicano, Native American, and Asian/Pacific Islander artists and artists with disabilities are encouraged to apply. May 2008,  Volume 1, Issue 6  The City of Oakland seeks Oakland artists to work with local youth to design and paint three community murals to help abate graffiti in the Coliseum Redevelopment Area. The budget is approx. $9,000 to $13,000 per mural site. Selected artists will work with community youth to develop mural design concepts during summer 2008 and to paint the murals in summer/fall ’08. This opportunity is open to Oakland-based practicing, professional artists and has a June 2, 2008 application deadline.
